worldwide. It is a day to inspire education, awareness and appreciation
about the Earth's
environment.
Earth Day takes place on April 22nd (U.S.) every year.

- Earth Day History
Earth Day began April 22, 1970, when an estimated 20 million people across the United States participated in pro-environment demonstrations. The event proved so popular that it became an annual event.
Earth Day got its start when Gaylord Nelson, then a U.S. Senator from Wisconsin, read an article about anti-war "teach-ins" that were proving successful in the peace movement. Nelson, who was interested in environmental issues, thought that a teach-in might be successful in raising public awareness of the environmental degradation in this country and around the world.
The resulting event was dubbed Earth Day. It proved to be so successful that it became an annual occurrence.
The impact of Earth Day is unquestionable; Congress passed the Clean Air Act after Earth Day, and the Environmental Protection Agency was created with three years of the event.
Although Arbor Day is nearly 100 years older, it has largely been eclipsed by Earth Day.

Grades: K-6th
Objectives: Development of creativity in discovering a way to help preserve the precious environment and developing neatness and presentation.
Materials Needed: White construction paper (or other drawing paper well suited for crayons), crayons. If desired: stencils, patterns.
Procedure: Have a poster contest in your class or with other classes for the best poster about. ways to help preserve the environment. Cut all paper the same size and allow children to use crayons and draw their environmental friendly idea. If they are available the children may use stencils for lettering or patterns for the design.
